The Apache Trail Scenic Drive, Arizona
Also known as Arizona State Route 88, its official name, the Apache Trail Scenic Drive is 40 miles in length. It stretches from Apache Junction to the Theodore Roosevelt Dam. The name comes from the Apache Native Americans who would travel this trail via the arresting Superstition Mountains. These days it’s mainly used by coaches and trucks.
It’s a well-maintained trail. However, there are some surprisingly sharp twists and turns and not all the surface is paved. This isn’t a road designed for inexperienced drivers because you can never be quite sure what’s around the next bend.
