  • Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned player, having the right golf clubs can significantly impact your game. A quality golf set includes all the essentials—drivers, irons, wedges, and putters—to tackle every shot on the course. For beginners, a complete golf set is an easy way to jump in without the hassle of picking individual clubs, often coming with a bag and designed to handle various course challenges. More experienced players might opt for custom sets, but pre-packaged options still offer great value. We tested a range of golf sets, factoring in skill level, swing speed, and budget, to find the best for different players.

    • Forgiving clubs that help improve shots
    • Lightweight and easy to carry

    Cons

    • Driver durability could be better
    • Not ideal for more advanced players
    • Limited club options compared to full sets

We recently took the Callaway Strata 12-piece set out for a few rounds, and we were impressed by its performance for the price. The lightweight 460cc driver has a large sweet spot that helped us get some nice distance off the tee. We found the oversized 3-wood easy to hit, giving us good results on longer fairway shots.

The 5-hybrid was a standout club in this set. It’s much easier to use than long irons, which can be tricky for new golfers. We got some nice, high-flying shots with it from various lies. The irons (6-9) and pitching wedge felt solid and gave us decent control around the greens.

We liked the mallet putter with its alignment aids. It helped us line up putts more accurately. The stand bag is lightweight and has enough pockets for our gear. While this set isn’t top-of-the-line, we think it’s a great starting point for new golfers or those getting back into the game after a long break.

    Cons

The driver has a nice black finish that cuts down on glare, which we found helpful on sunny days. We liked how easy it was to get good distance off the tee, even with our less-than-perfect swings.

The hybrid club was a standout for us. It filled the gap between woods and irons nicely, and we found it much easier to hit than long irons. The irons themselves have big sweet spots, which came in handy when we didn’t make perfect contact.

We did notice the putter took some getting used to. Its offset design is meant to help with alignment, but it felt a bit different from what we were used to. After a few holes, though, we started to get the hang of it.

The stand bag that comes with the set is pretty good. It’s light and has enough pockets for all our gear. We liked how easy it was to carry around the course.

While we think this set is great for beginners, more skilled players might find it limiting. The clubs aren’t made for fine-tuning or customization. We also heard from some users who got the wrong clubs in their set, so it’s worth double-checking everything when it arrives.

Buying Guide

When shopping for golf sets, there are a few key things to consider:

Skill Level

We recommend matching the clubs to your ability:

  • Beginners: Look for game-improvement clubs with larger sweet spots
  • Intermediate: Consider cavity-back irons for forgiveness and control
  • Advanced: Blade-style clubs offer more workability for skilled players

Set Composition

A typical set includes:

  • Driver
  • Fairway woods
  • Irons (3-9 or 4-9)
  • Wedges
  • Putter

Beginners may want a simpler set with fewer clubs to start.

Shaft Material

The two main options are:

Material Pros Cons
Steel Durable, consistent Heavier
Graphite Lighter, more flex More expensive

Club Fitting

We strongly suggest getting fitted by a pro. This ensures the clubs match your:

  • Height
  • Swing speed
  • Stance

Budget

Sets range from under $200 to over $2000. We recommend spending what you’re comfortable with based on how often you play.

Try Before You Buy

If possible, test out clubs at a golf store or driving range before purchasing. This lets you get a feel for different options.
