Summer remains one of the best seasons for those users who want to upgrade their iPhone or upgrade to it from other devices. After all, the holiday season is long behind, and the announcement of new Apple smartphones is not far off, which positively affects the cost of current models. There are no problems with their availability and choice. The most popular among buyers is the iPhone 12 128GB Black model, and the price chart clearly shows that it has significantly decreased compared to the spring.
Given that the iPhone 12 remains very popular, I decided to return to this model in the format of “pros” and “cons,” which formed in me more than after a month of use.
1. Price/Performance Ratio against other models in the iPhone 12 lineup
In the current line of smartphones of the manufacturer, the device remains one of the most affordable solutions. At the same time, in terms of capabilities, it minimally lags behind the formally older models. In the iPhone 12, the frames are made of aluminum rather than steel. There is no telephoto camera, no lidar, and a little less than the typical maximum screen brightness. But all other features are at the level of the iPhone 12 Pro, and the price is much less.
Competition iPhone 12 in this line of Apple could be the iPhone 12 mini. Still, as shown by sales and the subsequent reduction of its production, buyers prefer larger displays, and a diagonal of 5.4 inches they are not attracted.
2. Good material and water protection
The body of the iPhone 12 looks like the iPhone 4, which can already be attributed to the classics of smartphone design. But this is not their only similarity. The devices are quite similar in body design. Apple also used two glass panels that are recessed into a flat aluminum frame. Only unlike the iPhone 4, which used aluminosilicate glass, in the modern model, the company used ceramic glass Ceramic Shield from corning, known to users for its protective glass Gorilla Glass.
Ceramic Shield is based on ceramic nanocrystals embedded in the glass matrix through a high-temperature crystallization process. Their closed structure helps to resist the appearance of cracks and chips better. In doing so, Corning further strengthens the glass through ion exchange, significantly increases the size of the ions to create a stiffer structure to help hold the glass together in case of damage and to avoid deep scratches.
Previously, ceramic glass was not used to protect screens due to poor transparency, but Corning solved this problem at the expense of the same tiny ceramic crystals. Their size is smaller than the wavelength of light, and therefore ceramic Shield provides very high transparency, making it suitable for covering the display of the iPhone 12.
As you can see, the glass is quite innovative, but this is not the only advantage of the case. As it befits the flagship model, the device has protection against water and dust according to the IP68 standard.
3. High-quality display
iPhone 12 is equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2532×1170 pixels, called Super Retina XDR. Its typical maximum brightness reaches 650 nits, but in bright sun and playing HDR can automatically rise to 1200 nits.
Traditionally for Apple devices, the screen has good calibration. It displays 100% of the color space DCI-P3. In addition, there is support for proprietary True Tone technology, which adjusts the color temperature to the ambient lighting.
Compared to the iPhone 11, the display in the iPhone 12 is a big step forward for Apple’s smartphone, designed for a mass audience. It has higher resolution, brightness, contrast, and finally, a deep black color.
4. Very high performance
One of the advantages of Apple smartphones is its own processors, which for several years in a row are the leaders in performance. The iPhone 12 line in this regard is no exception. It uses the A14 Bionic chip with 6 cores, built on a 5-nanometer process, which made it possible to accommodate 11.8 billion transistors on the chip. In practice, the chip is very fast, both in applications and in games. I’ve been active in a few games with demanding graphics, mostly NBA2K21 and Fantasian, and these are full-fledged games with picture quality at the level of PS4 games.
And playing them, it feels that the margin of performance in the smartphone is more than enough. The same applies to applications. For example, in demanding photo processing programs, such as Afterlight and Retouch, all actions occur in them instantly.
Given that Apple supports even older models of smartphones, iOS 15 will be available even for the iPhone 6s. With the A14 Bionic chip, at least you can count on the comfortable use of the iPhone 12 for several years ahead.
5. Abundance of iOS apps and Privacy
The popularity of Apple smartphones has made the iOS platform very popular among developers, only last month at WWDC; the company reported that since the launch of the App Store, it has allowed developers to earn $230 billion. Therefore, the choice of programs and games on the Apple platform is simply huge. And most of them have a well-thought-out interface, as developers follow the recommendations of the Human Interface Guidelines from Apple.
It is also worth noting that the company is trying to stand out from the competition with a more stringent approach to protecting user data. In particular, this year, iOS added a feature that allows you to prohibit applications from tracking their activity and accordingly accumulate and process this data for transmission to advertisers.
6. Camera capabilities
iPhone 12 received two main cameras with a resolution of 12 megapixels, one wide-angle with an aperture of ƒ/1.6 and optical stabilization, the second ultra-wide-angle with an aperture of ƒ/2.4 and a viewing angle of 120°.
The detail of the images and post-processing in the iPhone 12 are slightly inferior to the main competitors, especially in poor lighting. Still, the cameras provide generally good photo quality with close to natural color reproduction. As a “pointed and shot” solution, the iPhone 12, with its simple camera interface and great shots for further processing, is a great solution for most modern users.
At the same time, for advanced users, there are a number of both built-in and third-party tools that allow you to squeeze more out of the camera.
You can change the exposure, manually activate the “night mode,” or use the Halide application, taking pictures in RAW+ format.
7. Good multimedia capabilities
The 6.1-inch display of the iPhone 12 supports the display of HDR content, and even despite not being the largest size, it is comfortable to watch videos, whether it’s YouTube or Netflix.
In addition, the smartphone is equipped with quite loud stereo speakers that provide surround sound.
To connect wired headphones in the iPhone 12 traditionally uses a Lightning port. Although today this is already rare, users are more likely to switch to wireless models, and for their connection in the smartphone, there is a Bluetooth 5.0 protocol.
8. Comfort of use in a car with CarPlay
Like other smartphones of the company, the iPhone 12 has support for the Apple CarPlay system. Incompatible cars allow you to display on the screen of the multimedia system an adapted iOS interface with applications that can be used behind the wheel. I used it on Peugeot 2008, and it is a very convenient solution with good integration into the car’s hardware. For example, when you press the navigation button on the instrument panel, the map opens in CarPlay.
Several navigation services now support the system itself, both the popular Google Maps, Waze, or TomTom and the lesser-known OsmAnd Maps and Organic Maps based on OpenStreetMap.
Listening to music is also quite a wide selection. There is both standard Apple Music and Spotify c YouTube Music. Podcast playback is supported, and Google Play Books can listen to audiobooks.
The non-obvious advantage of the iPhone 12 in the car is the size of the smartphone. They are not very large, so for him, you can almost always find a convenient niche.
9. Autonomy and Wireless charging
Built-in iPhone 12 battery has a capacity of 2815 mAh, which is frankly small by the standards of Android smartphones. Nevertheless, the energy-efficient platform and good optimization of iOS allow the device to work more than a day on a single charge, even with active use. You can count on almost six hours of active screens.
You can charge your smartphone wired through the Lightning port, but there is also support for wireless charging up to 7.5W. I basically recharged the iPhone 12 the last way, using the Moshi Lounge Q Wireless charging station in the office. It adjusts the height of the stand so that the device can be recharged both horizontally and vertically. This is not the fastest way to charge. It takes about three hours from 0 to 100%, but it is quite gentle for the battery.
About the same amount takes recharging through the magnetic connector MagSafe. Compared to wireless charging, it does not make much sense since it can only recharge compatible iPhones, and any charging panel with the Qi standard is suitable for other smartphones.
You can recharge the smartphone faster from a power supply of 20 W or more when wired from USB Type-C to Lightning. In 30 minutes, a fully discharged battery replenishes the charge up to 50%.
10. Integration into the Apple Ecosystem
One of the advantages of Apple is a thoughtful and convenient ecosystem of products that complement its smartphones. For example, the Apple Watch smartwatch doesn’t just allow you to track physical activity or display alerts from the iPhone 12. It can now be used to unlock your smartphone when you’re wearing a mask.
Integration is also convenient. You can control the camera directly from the Apple Watch, receive a phone call from your Mac without touching the iPhone, start writing a letter on one device, continue on another, and quickly switch AirPods headphones from one to another.
