The Germans turned the virtual concept Mini Vision Urbanaut into a real prototype of an electric car

At the end of last year, designers presented the concept of an autonomous electric minivan with a convertible interior Mini Vision Urbanaut. The model was completely digital, but the creators and the public liked it so much that they decided to transfer it to the relay world, assembling a fully functional car capable of independent movement.

Interestingly, the Mini Vision Urbanaut was created on the principle of “from internal to external design.” At the first stage, designers developed the interior of the car, using elements of fittings and wooden scale models. The next stage was creating a digital model of the car using augmented reality technology, after which a physical sample of the concept was assembled in the MINI Design studio in Munich.

Here, the BMW Group specialists have embodied all their experience to transform the digital image of the car into a real concept. Modelers, programmers, paint specialists, engineers, and many other PROFESSIONALS of the BMW Group worked together with designers to elaborate the MINI Vision Urbanaut to the quality of a full-fledged prototype. Every part has been specially designed and manufactured by hand using the most advanced tools.

A feature of the Mini Vision Urbanaut is the concept of mini moments, which include Chill, Wanderlust, and Vibe – in each of them, the exterior and interior are changed in such a way as to provide the most suitable environment for passengers. At the same time, the atmosphere is further enhanced by special aromas, sound, and lighting.

In addition to three standard moments, the owner can create a personal “My Moment” in which wide personalization opportunities will allow you to express the mood and wishes of the owner accurately.

  • Chill – at this point, the concept offers passengers to take a breath from the daily affairs and relax. The car becomes an oasis of comfort, giving the opportunity to relax or work with maximum concentration. The Cozy Corner back soph seat can take a vertical or completely horizontal position, and the lighting above it mimics green forest foliage. The round element in the center of the cabin folds, turning into a table lamp, and hides from sight any displays and switches.
  • Wanderlust is the only moment of MINI, which involves movement in manual or automated control mode. The ergonomics of the interior are adjusted for maximum convenience of the driver, offering passengers to rethink the romance of travel. It is enough to touch the Mini logo to access the steering wheel and pedals. The central circular display interface provides route information, including surrounding attractions and arrival times at the destination.
  • Vibe – this moment brings to the fore communication with other people. Swinging side door and windshield completely erase the boundaries between the interior and the outside world. The central round element becomes a tool for controlling the infotainment system. Animation of graphic equalizers, working to the beat with music, is projected on the surface of the body, wheels and light element above the rear seat, creating a pleasant “club” atmosphere.

In creating the Mini Vision Urbanaut, engineers followed the principle of responsible use of resources while all the components used are recyclable. Avoiding excessive use of materials, the development team gave some details of the interior double functionality.

For example, the dashboard can turn into a couch, and the central OLED display in Chill mode becomes a stylish lamp. In addition, the concept did not use chrome or genuine leather but uses textiles made of recycled materials, including wool, polyester, and tencel. In the design of the steering wheel and floor sections, cork is used, which adds to the interior aesthetics of natural naturalness and maintains a pleasant microclimate. All these features are complemented by an electric power plant and zero emissions.
